[bersih 2.0] An Old Lady named Anne

Anne, from setapak, took a bus ride down to KL, ALONE, in support of the rally. she was stopped 4 times, being asked her IC, and questioned by the police on why she's wearing yellow. "why can't I wear yellow?" was her reply.

she didn't know what time the rally was scheduled to start, she didn't know where, she has no one with her; all she knew was to get down to KL, and stand for what she believes in.

Anne teaches English in government schools for about 35 years (if i remember correctly). but her passion is really singing and dancing; and what she values most in her life now is freedom.

Anne has rallied in bersih 2007. she was disappointed as to why no one else was wearing yellow that day. we said chill lah.. that's cuz if we do, we'd be stopped by the cops even before we get the chance to enter KL. "it's so sad.. it's so sad that the police are treating our rakyats like these."

"When you come to rallies, there's a spirit of unity... something i cannot describe... when everyone is united for a cause. you don't even get this sort of unity in church."

The first thing she asked when she sat on our table, "what are you guys doing here?"

She left me with a question that still resides in my heart. now may i impose on you to think about it. "Why do we have to feel so scared (and threatened) in our own home land.. and by own countrymen?"

i told Anne that i wanted to take a photograph with her. she asked, "why? unless you're gonna write about it."

Everything Happen For A Reason

Sometimes people come into your life and you know right away that they were meant to be there...to serve some sort of purpose, teach you a lesson or help figure out who you are or who you want to become. You never know who these people may be but you lock eyes with them, you know that very momentthat they will affect your life in some profound way.

And sometimes things happen to you at the time that may seem horrible,
painful and unfair, but in reflection you realize that without overcoming those obstacles you would never realize your potential, strength, will power or heart.

Everything happens for a reason. Nothing happens by chance or by means of luck. Illness, love, lost moments of true greatness and sheer stupidity all occur to test limits of your soul.

Without these small tests, life would be like a smoothly paved, straight, flat road to nowhere safe and comfortable but dull and utterly pointless.

The people you meet affect your life. The successes and downfalls that you experience can create whom you are, and the bad experiences can be learned from. In fact they are probably the most poignant and important ones. If someone hurts you, betrays you or breaks your heart, forgive them because they have helped you learn about trust and the impor tance of being cautious to whom you open your heart.

If someone loves you, love them back unconditionally, not only because they love you, but also because they are teaching you to love and open your heart and eyes to little things. Make every day count. Appreciate everything that you possibly can, for you may never experience it again.

Talk to people whom you have never talked to before, and actually listen. Let yourself fall in love, break free and set your sights high. Hold your head up because you have every right to.

Tell yourself you are a great individual and believe in yourself, for if you don't believe in yourself, no one else will believe in you. Create you own life and then go out and live it.

Do you eat instant noodle?

Please check the instant noodle at your home.
Check whether it is from Mainland China.
For the sake of your life,
do not consume if you found any in your food cabinet.

The plasticizer scandal that hit the Taiwan’s food industry is also affecting food production in Mainland China, according to a recently published study. Since May, hundreds of Taiwanese food items have been found to contain DEHP. It’s an organic compound, normally used for increasing the plasticity and fluidity in plastic. In Taiwan, food producers have been illegally adding DEHP to beverages and foods, like jam and jelly, to improve their appearance. Plasticizers can cause hormonal imbalance, and are a hazard for pregnant women and children.

They were first found in foods produced in Taiwan. But earlier this month, Associate Professor Lin Chunhuong from South China Agricultural University says she found DEHP in samples of Chinese-made instant noodles. The research results were published in China’s “Food Science” magazine. Lin and her team found DEHP in more than half of the samples, with some exceeding the national safety standard by up to one hundred times. They believe the DEHP was leaked from the noodle’s plastic packaging, but a Public Health professor doubts that’s the case.

[Professor Chen Yu-ming, School of Public Health , Sun Yat-sen University]:
“I don’t think it’s pure contamination, the [DEHP] was likely added to improve the texture of the food. Food packaging is usually stable, and doesn’t easily leak substances.”

Lin says her research was based on samples taken in October last year, and is not related to the current scandal in Taiwan.

Movie Review: Homerun (2003)

Homerun (Chinese: 跑吧!孩子 pinyin: pǎo bà háizǐ, lit. Run, Child!), a 2003 Singaporean film by Jack Neo, is an adaptation of Children of Heaven. Jack Neo adapts Children of Heaven to a 1960s Singaporean kampung setting, to emphasise the messages of friendship and kinship.

homerun

Homerun is a drama about two poor siblings and their adventures over a lost pairs of shoes. Set in 1965, the year Singapore separated from Malaysia, the film satirises political relations between the two countries, leading to its banning in Malaysia.

homerun

In 1965, two poor Singaporean children, Chew Kiat Kun and his younger sister Seow Fang live with their mother who is late in her third pregnancy and their father who is in debt to a local rice merchant. The family's problems are compounded when Kiat Kun accidentally loses Seow Fang's only pair of shoes after taking them to be repaired.

In today's life, it might just be a small matter. Buying another pair of new school shoes is not a big deal.

However to this poor Chew family, Kiat Kun has to share his shoes with his sister because he knew that his parents cannot afford to buy a new one. Seow Fang is chastised for wearing oversized shoes to school, while Kiat Kun is repeatedly late as he must wait for his sister to exchange shoes with him.

Another of my favourite scene is at school, a wealthy schoolmate of Kiat Kun's named Tan Beng Soon runs a football team with his friends. Kiat Kun and his friends strike a bargain with Beng Soon to play on the team using the other boys' football shoes, in exchange for helping them cheat on their homework. However, the boys quarrel, causing an angry Beng Soon to renege on the deal and remove Kiat Kun and his friends from the team.

What I can see here is that if we want something, we must work for it.

Do not depends on others. The best weapon is yourself.

No matter what, do not ever start a fight.

homerun

The final scene in the film shows the Chew siblings standing before a long muddy path with their new pair of shoes.

For me, if I imagine the shoes represents money, then the interpretation will goes like this:

Having no money it is a definitely a problem, when you have money, there will also be problem. However, have money of course, is always better than being poor. Thus, be wise to utilise what we own. Appreciate it!

When you do not have money, you cannot buy the things that you want.

When you have money, you worry that your money is gone (stolen, lose, etc).

This movie requires the audience to use their imaginations to interpret in a few scenes.

Different view, different outcome.

Enjoy!

p/s: And yes, after watching this, I won't simply buy unnecessary shoes.
